This course follows the WJEC Level 3 Criminology specification.
Recommended pre-requisite – English Language and Literature GCSE Level 4 and above.
This course develops students’ independence, research and problem-solving skills through four units studied over two years. Knowledge and skills are tested through a combination of internal controlled assessment (Unit 1 and 3) and external examination (Unit 2 and 4). Units 1 and 2 are assessed at the end of the first year and Units 3 and 4 at the end of the second.
Unit 1 provides students with an understanding of how campaigns for change can influence law making. Unit 2 considers a variety of criminological theories and asks how effective they are in explaining the causes of criminal behaviour. Upon successful completion of these units students will receive an Applied Certificate in Criminology. However, they can choose to continue into year 2 and obtain an Applied Diploma in Criminology after completing the full two year course.
In Unit 3 students develop the understanding and skills needed to examine information in order to review the justice of verdicts in criminal cases. Finally, in Unit 4, students will learn about the criminal justice system in England and Wales and how it operates to achieve social control.

This course follows the AQA A Level Law specification.

The course develops the student’s analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills. It is examined at the end of second year by three 2hr papers, each of equal weighting.
We progress through the curriculum by splitting it into three units. The first unit develops knowledge and understanding of the Law-making process and Legal System together with an evaluation of its operation and performance. The second unit introduces aspects of substantive law (criminal law, tort law and contract law) and requires an application of the law to scenario-based questions. Finally, in unit three, we engage in a conceptual evaluation of the law in relation to justice, morality and society.

This course would suit a student who has a general interest in law who may not already be taking the full A Level Law course. This enrichment course will be distinct from the full A Level Law course and although it will touch on some similar topics will also look at other areas such as the police and employment law.
